Artist Statement

My original works are abstraction statements that dance between the line of both expressionism and impressionism. I choose a subject matter that is a study between organic forms, pattern, colour and movement as it relates to nature on land and underwater. Within the multiple layers of elements, at a distance the viewer is presented with a bold and graphic composition, however, at a closer view are entranced by the detailed movement and flow of the components.

I’m inspired by natures elements of earth, water and air and their harmonious flow. I combine, colour, form and gestural markings to convey the story of each and build upon them within the many layers. Nature has a natural production of repetition and spontaneous characteristics that I work to emulate in my paintings. They represent the energy and force of nature deconstructed in an abstract approach. I use a mixed media of acrylic paints, inks, oil pastel and spray paints to capture the texture and raw detail found in natural settings.

My process is deeply intuitive with an unrestricted approach, often relinquishing control so emotion and energy can happen voluntarily when a mark is made. Before my painting sessions, I often ground myself through short meditation or physically interacting with nature. A barefoot walk in the grass or the touch of an element in the garden can spark a creation. In the beginning, music plays a very strong role in the pace of the piece as I start to lay the organic shapes. The beat dictates the direction the forms will take and how they communicate with each other. The layers of media overlap and create value to build depth and start to give direction to the piece. Layers of paint, then mark making followed by more paint layers, start unfolding the story that piece wants to tell. There is little prediction of the finished product and I consider it finished when I feel there is harmony and balance within the chaotic composition.

Observers of my work have found a deep connection to nature and natural surroundings with underwater currents in a coral reef or the flow of wind through the trees and a bountiful garden. As the creator, I wish to share the connectedness I feel we all have to our surroundings and the value of that spiritual connection. My goal is to invoke an emotional response of belonging and pleasure.
